Back in 1999, “Whassup?” had become an emotion, and Budweiser’s ad captured the emotion and was all over the media. What was the “Whassup?” campaign all about, read today’s MMM to find out.
Whassup? (also known as Wazzup) was a commercial campaign for Anheuser-Busch Budweiser beer from 1999 to 2002. The first spot aired during Monday Night Football on December 20, 1999. The ad campaign was run worldwide and became a pop culture catchphrase. The phrase itself is a slurred version of the phrase “What’s up?”.
It became one of the most popular and memorable campaigns ever and was one of the first campaigns to go viral. For a while, “Whassup” was everywhere. Parodies showed up on the Internet, on TV shows and in movies. Talk show hosts and DJs used it in their routines. The guys became celebrities in their own right. “Whassup” became a global phenomenon, popular even in countries where Bud isn’t sold. It was a wild ride.
“Whassup” helped make Budweiser a hipper, cooler brand.
The campaign was a huge success and is brought back to encourage people to check in on their friends during the lockdown. Attached is the YouTube video of 2020 version of the campaign.
